Under the Dome in the third quarter on a nine-yard scoring catch by Joe Heap from Ralph Guglielmi and then Art Hunter pouncing on a loose ball in the end zone from a high snap by Georgia Tech on a punt attempt. The scoring concludes in the fourth quarter when senior Johnny Lattner, on his 21st birthday, plunges over from the Tech 1-yard line after the student body sings "Happy Birthday." 40 Years Ago: Oct. 27, 1973 In the most famous run from scrimmage in Notre Dame Stadium history, Eric Penick's 85-yard touchdown gallop on the first Irish play in the second half provides a 20-7 cushion en route to a 23-14 conquest that snaps defending national champion USC's 23-game unbeaten streak. The victory elevates head coach Ara Parseghian's 6-0 Fighting Irish from No. 8 to No. 5 in the Associated Press poll and marks the first victory over their archrival in seven years. Freshman safety Luther Bradley and junior linebacker Greg Collins headline the defensive effort while forcing four turnovers and limiting Heisman Trophy candidate Anthony Davis to 55 yards on 19 carries. Kicker Bob Thomas converts all three of his field goal attempts for the Irish. 20 Years Ago: Oct. 23, 1993 For a record 11th consecutive year, No. 2-ranked Notre Dame defeats USC, 31-13, improving to 8-0 and setting up a Nov. 13 showdown with No. 1 Florida State. Junior tailback Lee Becton romps for a 70-yard touchdown on the game's second play and headlines a 305-yard rushing effort with 177 yards on 20 attempts. The Irish build a 28-7 halftime lead and coast from there behind junior quarterback Paul Failla, who starts in place of the injured Kevin McDougal. Failla completes 6 of 9 passes for 78 yards, with a 29-yard scoring pass to fullback Ray Zellars. — Lou Somogyi In 1973, running back Eric Penick's 85-yard touchdown run on the first play in the second half propelled Notre Dame to a 23-14 win over USC that snapped the defending national champion's 23-game unbeaten streak. photo courtesy notre dame media relations
