Ba ketball Preview 2013-14 ■ Jordan Vandenberg 14• C 5th-Sr. • Melbourne, Australia • 7-1 • 245 Analysis: Vandenberg has been an off-and-on reserve throughout his career at NC State, and this is his best opportunity to get on the court on a consistent basis. To take advantage of this chance, Vandenberg showed up to preseason practices noticeably slimmer after losing 20 pounds during the offseason.Vandenberg has always been a long and relatively athletic seven-footer. The weight loss should give him the conditioning to be a defensive and rebounding presence for NCSU. Career Highlights: Scored a season-high six points in 14 minutes at Wake Forest last year … Played in 23 overall games, making one start … Ironically, in all three of Vandenberg's full seasons, he has played 23 games and made one start … Was granted a medical redshirt in 2011-12 after he appeared in seven games, but missed the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury … In the seven games he played in, he averaged 2.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 11.9 minutes per outing … Against Princeton in 2011, he scored six points, grabbed five boards and blocked two shots …  Against Georgia Tech during his sophomore season, he notched a career-best eight points on four dunks … During his rookie campaign, he appeared in 23 games and blocked 18 shots, which was tied for third-best on the team … He notched at least two blocks in five games … Earned his first career start against Arizona and tallied a career-best 11 rebounds … He has also logged 49 blocked shots in 603 career minutes … Attended the same Australian Institute of Sport school that produced NBA big men Andre Bogut, Luc Longley and Luke Schenscher. Coach's Corner: "He's in the best position to have a good year that he's ever been in." — Head coach Mark Gottfried Personal: Majoring in business administration — human resources. I've been number 14 for like 12 years now, so I've just stayed with it. What's your favorite spot to shoot from on the court? On the right block coming into the middle. What was your favorite NBA team growing up? San Antonio Spurs. If you could go back in history and meet any person from the past, who would it be? Leonardo da Vinci, just to talk to a man who designed things that weren't even made for 500 years. Who has been your biggest role model in basketball? I have to say Andrew Bogut, who plays for Golden State now. I've known him for a while, and he's a great contact, a great person. He works hard, and he's been through a bunch of injuries. He's a good person to look up to. Android or iPhone? iPhone. Where would be your dream vacation? Bora Bora. Who is the greatest basketball player of all-time? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar If you couldn't be a professional basketball player, what would you like to be when you finish college? I'm getting a degree in human resources, so anything that involves my degree would be wonderful. Who has the best twitter handle of the team? That'd be Cat Barber (@catbarber1994) because he's just being honest. [Barber's twitter bio reads: "IM JUST BEING HONEST!!"] photo by ken martin November 2013  ■ 59 48-50,52,54,56,58-60,62,64,66.Men's Bios.indd 59 10/22/13 12:35 PM
