NOTEBOOK WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Rose moves to No. 2 in all-time coaching wins Add another bullet point to Russ Rose's Hall of Fame resume. No. 4 Penn State swept Northwestern, 3-0, on Oct. 20, giving Rose his 1,107th career victory. That total ranks second all-time in NCAA Division I wins. Previously ranked No. 1, the Nittany Lions lost their first match as the country's top team, falling to Michigan State, 3-2, in Rec Hall on Sept. 27. However, they rebounded with seven consecutive victories, including their straight-set win over the Wildcats at Welsh Ryan Arena. WOMEN'S SOCCER Lions bounce back vs. Ohio State, Illinois After suffering back-to-back 1-0 losses to Minnesota and Michigan, Penn State rebounded with decisive victories against Ohio State and Illinois at Jeffery Field on Oct. 17 and 20. After the consecutive shutouts, the No. 17 Nittany Lions scored nine combined goals against the Buckeyes and Illini to improve their overall record to 12-3-1 on the season, including a 6-2 mark in conference play. FIELD HOCKEY Penn State extends win streak to 10 The Nittany Lions stormed out of the gates this season with nine consecutive victories and a perfect Big Ten record, but they put it all in jeopardy against visiting Michigan State on Oct. 19. The Spartans, who also entered the contest unbeaten in conference play, jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but the Lions rallied with two goals in the final five minutes of regulation. They completed the comeback after two scoreless overtime periods, prevailing in a penalty shootout for a 4-3 victory. Penn State was 4-0 in Big Ten games as of this writing, its best start since 2008, and its 10-game winning streak was the second-longest in the country. WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY Lions split with Union in Ice Arena debut One week after the men's team christened the Pegula Ice Arena with a persuasive victory over Army, Penn State's women took their turn. While their opening night wasn't as successful, they made up for it with a home win the following afternoon. After opening the season with a fourgame road trip to Vermont and Quinnipiac in which they went 1-2-1, the Nittany Lions returned home on Oct. 18. They dropped the first game in the "Pegloo," 2-1, to Union, surrendering two powerplay goals. "A lot of good things happened out there, coach Josh Brandwene " said. "Both teams played well. Sometimes you play well [but] you don't get the outcome you want. " The next day, Brandwene got the outcome he wanted, as Penn State was on the winning end of a 2-1 score, thanks to freshman Laura Bowman's late goal. I
