irish in the pros In three seasons with the Irish — he sat out his junior year after undergoing Tommy John surgery — Axford went 14‑6 with a primary role of starting pitcher. After graduating from Notre Dame with a degree in film, television and theatre, he spent his final year of eligibility with Canisuis and posted a 3‑8 record. He climbed to the majors and quickly made a name for himself in Milwaukee, where he posted a clubrecord 46 saves in 2011. Although the Cardinals lost the World Series in six games to the Boston Red Sox, Axford's October was much more eventful than if the Brewers had chosen to keep him. This offseason, he is arbitration eligible and is likely to return to the Cardinals with a hefty one-year salary of around $5 million. NFL Notes Through Oct. 31 • Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate hauled in five receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns in a 14-9 win over the St. Louis Rams Oct. 28. Through eight games, Tate had caught 32 passes for 439 yards and three touchdowns for the first-place Seahawks. • Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Floyd caught his second touchdown pass of the season in a win over the Atlanta Falcons Oct. 27. Through eight games, he had 34 receptions for 433 yards and a pair of scores. • Kansas City Chiefs tight end Anthony Fasano returned from ankle and knee injuries to catch six passes for 41 yards in two games after sitting out four contests. • Cincinnati Bengals rookie tight end Tyler Eifert caught five passes for 37 yards in his two most recent contests, a 49-9 win over the New York Jets Oct. 27 and 22-20 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins Oct. 31. Rookie tight end Tyler Eifert hauled in 27 receptions for 307 yards (11.4 yards per catch) and one touchdown during the Cincinnati Bengals' 6-3 start. photo courtesy Cincinnati Bengals • Minnesota Vikings tight end John Carlson has struggled in 2013 with seven receptions for 38 yards and no touchdowns through seven games. In August, Forbes named Carlson, who is in the second year of a five-year, $25 million contract, the second-mostoverpaid player in the NFL. Teammate and fellow tight end Kyle Rudolph recorded four receptions for 41 yards in a loss to the Green Bay Packers Oct. 27. • Vikings safety Harrison Smith was placed on the injured reserve with designation to return tag after sustaining turf toe. With the designation, Smith, who might undergo surgery, would be eligible to return late in the season. • Detroit Lions running back Theo Riddick carried the ball once for seven yards in a wild 31-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys Oct. 27. It was just his third rush of the season, but the rookie has been a valuable member of Detroit's special teams. ✦
