ND Sports similar fashion and have since turned strong foundations into current top-10 rankings. Sachire is hoping the same bright future lies ahead in South Bend. Andrews, a senior and the team's No. 1 singles player, is Sachire's first shot to have a player make a splash on the national scene. The duo has worked together closely since Andrews arrived as a self-described "brat" as a freshman. Sachire helped him learn to keep his emotions in check and play with a target on his back. The senior will be one of 32 college players competing at the indoor na- tional championship meet during the second week of November. He came in second place at the Midwest regional meet last month. Sachire said Andrews' leadership and intensity have been a big part of the equation for his smooth transition. "I couldn't hand pick a better person to start my tenure as head coach as our No. 1 player and captain and true leader than him," he said. "That's a huge testament to him because we've had a lot great players come through here, but I don't know that there's anybody I'd pick over him." ✦ Irish Roundup Hockey (5-1) No. 2 Notre Dame finished its pre-conference schedule with its first loss of the season, a 4-1 defeat at Minnesota-Duluth. The Irish won 3-2 the previous night against the Bulldogs. Freshman goalie Chad Katunar made his first collegiate start in the loss after relieving senior Steve Summerhays in the third period the night before. The Irish played their first-ever Hockey East games at Vermont Nov. 1-2. Men's Soccer (8-1-5, 5-1-3 ACC) Notre Dame remained at No. 2 in the national polls despite losing its first game of the season, a 2-0 shutout to No. 19 Virginia at home. The conference loss dropped the Irish one game behind Wake Forest in the ACC standings. Those two teams met Nov. 2 in a game that could decide postseason seeding. Women's Soccer (11-5-1, 7-4-1 ACC) The Irish got back to their winning ways with wins over Boston College (3-1) and Clemson (2-0) during the final week of October. The win over the Eagles ended a four-game losing streak. Notre Dame will be seeded fifth in the ACC Tournament, with the quarterfinals being held on campus sites Nov. 3. Volleyball (8-13, 2-8 ACC) The Irish ended October struggling to find their footing in their new conference. They lost three straight — against Virginia, Virginia Tech and Florida State — to close October. Ten more conference games remain in the regular season, and Notre Dame currently sits in 13th place out of 15 teams.
