It's the logical reason why Penn State recently offered Tarow Barney, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound from Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Miss. The junior college's defensive coordinator, Ricky Coon, said Barney might visit Penn State this week. "About three weeks ago, I sent out an email and some tape on Tarow to a number of different Division I football programs across the country," stated Coon. "Coach [Larry] Johnson was one of the first coaches that got back in touch with me. "He told me they were impressed with Tarow's film and that they wanted to get all the information they could on him, additional film and all his academic transcripts. " Coon said Johnson offered Barney a scholarship on Oct. 29. Penn State would like to recruit at least one defensive lineman in this class who can immediately compete for a starting tackle spot in next season. "Coach Johnson indicated to me they want to recruit a defensive tackle that could have an impact on the program right away," Coon said. "He felt Tarow could fill that role, and I agree." Barney had an exceptional 2013 season – despite the fact that Northwest Mississippi Community College finished the season with a 1-8 record. He was credited with 36 total tackles, 18 solo tackles, 18 assists, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks for 31 yards in losses, one forced fumble and five quarterback hurries. "Tarow is a high-character, low-key type of player," Coon said, "He's a very good student who is an amazing athlete for a player his size. "He uses his hands very well, and he's terrific at getting penetration and has suN O V E M B E R perb vertical pass rush from his [threetechnique] defensive tackle position. He can change directions on a dime – not easy for a player his size. " Coon added that Barney can run a 40yard dash in 4.9 seconds and that he has the best lateral mobility and quickness of any defensive lineman he's coached at the junior college level. Barney took an unofficial visit to Alabama on Oct. 30, and Coon said Barney's list of scholarship offers has risen to close to a dozen this month. "Colorado just called and offered, Coon " said. "Besides Penn State, he has offers from Illinois, Iowa State, UAB, UTEP, Northern Illinois, Arizona State and a few others. "In a couple of weeks, I think his scholarship list could grow to as high as 20 offers." In the near future, that list could include Alabama. "Tarow really liked his trip to Alabama, " Coon said. "They told him once they got all his academic transcripts, he could very easily get an offer." Barney took an official to Iowa State on Nov. 2, and is in the process of setting up an official visit to Penn State. Said Coon, "I fully expect that his official visit to Penn State will take place sometime [in November]." Coon indicated that Barney will graduate in December and will enroll at the school of his choice in January. "Coach Johnson indicated to me that was an important reason why Penn State decided to recruit Tarow," Coon explained. "They believe they need to recruit a defensive tackle who can challenge for a starting position right away. " Right now it appears that Barney is favoring Penn State and Alabama. It is expected that Barney will take his official visit to Penn State for either the Purdue (Nov. 16) or the Nebraska (Nov. 23) game. 6 , 2 0 1 3 9 WAYC..............100.9-FM......................................Bedford WCPA............. 900-AM......................................
