PSU's former home court hosted many memorable games

I
t was just one of the 934 games played
in Rec Hall by Penn State's men's and
women's varsity basketball teams
since the all-purpose gymnasium and
athletics building opened in 1929, but
it stands out above all others in the memory
of most fans.
The 7,540 people who were there and
the thousands of others who saw the game
on national television will never forget
that 88-84 double-overtime loss to No. 1
Indiana on Feb. 9, 1993.
Of course, there were other memorable
basketball games in that old but treasured
arena, including the first on Jan. 15, 1929,
when the Nittany Lions defeated Gettysburg in overtime, 37-34.
Some old-timers still remember upset
victories more than 60 years ago over a
pair of ranked West Virginia teams: 50-
46 in 1948 when the Mountaineers were
No. 5, and 84-65 in 1952 when they were
No. 10. Or the famous "freeze" game victories over Pitt in 1950 and 1952.
Then there were the Lady Lions, who
stunned third-ranked Louisiana Tech,
72-68, on Feb. 12, 1986. The Lady Techsters were the highest-ranked opponent
that Penn State had defeated since its
inaugural varsity season in 1965. The
