ND Sports No. 10 Virginia beat the Irish 4-3 in penalty kicks in the semifinal round to knock them out of contention Nov. 15. Notre Dame opened up a 3-1 lead on goals from senior Harrison Shipp, sophomore Patrick Hodan and senior Andrew O'Malley. The Cavaliers scored twice in the final six minutes of regulation to force overtime. Notre Dame was scheduled to play its first NCAA Tournament match Nov. 24 versus either Wisconsin or Milwaukee. Women's Soccer (12-7-1, 7-5-1 ACC) The Irish won their first NCAA Tournament game, a convincing 4-1 performance against Iowa Nov. 15. Freshman Morgan Andrews — the ACC's Rookie of the Year — scored two early goals, and Notre Dame's offense fired 32 shots on the Hawkeyes in the winning effort. Sophomore Katie Naughton and senior Elizabeth Tucker also scored for Notre Dame. The Irish slumped in October for the second straight season, but are looking to repeat last year's revival in the postseason when they made it to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. They traveled to Ann Arbor Nov. 22 to play Western Michigan in the round of 32. Swimming & Diving Notre Dame is racking up conference honors in its first season in the ACC. The men's and women's squads both swept the Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards during the third week of November. Senior Frank Dyer won five individual races in team victories over Michigan State and No. 23 Wisconsin to take Swimmer of the Week honors. Freshman diver Joe Coumos finished in first place in the three-meter competition in both meets and also won the one-meter contest against Wisconsin. The women's team won meets against Valparaiso and 24th-ranked Wisconsin, thanks to standout performance by juniors Emma Reaney and Allison Casareto. Reaney continued to dominate competition on the way to her third Swimmer of the Week award this season. Casareto won three of the four diving events during the two meets. Volleyball (11-16, 5-11 ACC) Notre Dame's first season in its new conference winds to a close Nov. 30 with a home match against Syracuse. The Irish have struggled to find their footing in a tough new league. Losses at Miami and Florida State in straight sets knocked the Irish back to 12th place in the ACC standings in mid-November. Senior Nicole Smith had nine kills to lead Notre Dame in the loss to the Seminoles. Cross Country Notre Dame's men's and women's teams finished third and fourth, respectively, in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships Nov. 15. Senior Kelly Curran led the women with a third-place overall finish on the six-kilometer course. Fifth-year senior Jeremy Rae took fifth overall on the men's side, one spot in front of senior Martin Grady. The men finished with 74 points, only four behind first-place Michigan. The times were good enough for both the men and women to qualify to race in the national championship meet Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind. — Dan Murphy
