Several holdovers and newcomers will battle for the starting jobs at the corner positions. Bubby Riley, a transfer from Delgado Community College in New Orleans, should play left field. A small posse will battle for time in right. Freshmen Preston Palmeiro and Andrew Knizner are the favorites to flank Turner and Ratledge in the infield. Avent's teams have always stressed defensive fundamentals, and this year's team should score more runs merely by virtue of Turner's return to health. In the end, however, Avent says it still will come down to the bullpen. "We're still going to have to define what we're doing at the back end of games," he said. "Scoring more runs, playing great defense and getting more innings out of our starters — we need to do all that, and I believe we will. But if we're going to be a great team and meet expectations, we have to be able to pitch the late innings and close out games." ■ Noting The Pack • With the ACC expanded to 14 teams this season, it's more interesting to note which teams NC State will not face in 2014 rather than whom they will face and where. For the first time in conference history, NC State will play neither North Carolina nor Virginia in a regular-season conference series.The Wolfpack will face the Tar Heels in a nonconference midweek game April 15 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. • NC State will make its first trip to the West Coast in 10 years. The Pack will open the season with a three-game series Feb. 14-16 at UC Santa Barbara, located west of Los Angeles along the Pacific coast. The Gauchos went 35-25 a year ago and earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in more than a decade. • Richmond, coached by former Wolfpack AllAmerican Tracy Woodson, will come to Doak Field at Dail Park May 7 for a midweek game. Woodson, a Richmond native, coached at Valparaiso the last seven years, taking Valpo to within one win of what would have been its first NCAA Super Regional appearance.The Spiders are coming off a 31-24 season and return 26 of 31 letter winners, including six position players and all but two pitchers. • If freshman first baseman Preston Palmeiro looks familiar to Wolfpack fans, it's because he bears a striking family resemblance to his father, former big leaguer Rafael Palmeiro. The elder Palmeiro, an All-American in his collegiate days at Mississippi State, played 20 seasons in the big leagues with the Cubs, Rangers and Orioles. • Appalachian State returns to Doak Field at Dail Park the weekend of Feb. 21-23, and no doubt All-America left-hander Carlos Rodon will at least make a mental note of that series. The Mountaineers opened the 2013 season at the Doak and roughed up Rodon, handing him his first collegiate loss and hitting three home runs in six innings.
