The former Rivals.com five-star prospect
doesn't count toward the team recruiting
rankings, but he could be a very important
part of the class.
"Trevor is going to be a terrific player
here, and I think our players practicing
against him every day know it," Gottfried
said.
Gottfried has signed eight top-60 players
and 11 who were in Rivals.com's top 150
over the last three years. NCSU also landed
junior college transfer Desmond Lee, who
was listed as the No. 29 juco prospect by
JucoJunction.com.
NC State signed three post players in
the class of 2013 — center BeeJay Anya,
and power forwards Kyle Washington and
Lennard Freeman — but Abu brings some
different skills to the squad.
"I liked his motor, size, quickness and
strength, and it jumped right out to me,"
Gottfried said. "Orlando did a phenomenal
job of getting to know him better and selling him on NC State.
"He is the perfect fit because he is a
6-foot-8 player that can post up and drive it
from the perimeter, yet he can also step out
and make a three-point shot."
The Boston native impressed Gottfried
by fasting during Ramadan for his Islamic
religion, which ran from July 8-Aug. 7.
Meriden (N.H.) Kimball Union Academy power
forward Abdul-Malik Abu, the nation's No. 50
overall player according to Rivals.com, is the
eighth top-60 player to sign with Gottfried
since he took over at NC State.
