The Irish had the highest winning percentage nationally 20 years ago — 13-6 (.684) — for teams that had played in at least 15 postseason contests. Since then it's been 2-11, including the dubious NCAA-record nine-game losing streak from Jan. 1, 1995, until Dec. 24, 2008, when the 6-6 Irish defeated Hawaii 49-21 in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. • Brian Kelly is 1-2 in bowl games at Notre Dame. He became the first coach for the Irish to win a postseason game in his first season, 33-17 versus Miami in the 2010 Hyundai Sun Bowl. That was followed by an 18-14 loss to Florida State in the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl and the 42-14 debacle versus Alabama in last season's BCS National Championship Game. • With Notre Dame ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press poll, it will attempt to finish ranked in the AP in back-to-back years for only the second time overall since 1993. The other was 2005 (No. 9) and 2006 (No. 17). • Notre Dame's four straight bowls from 2010-13 is the second-longest streak in school history, behind the nine in a row from 1987-95. The team or school opted not to attend bowls in 1971, 1975 and 1979 with records of 8-2, 8-3 and 7-4. Years sometimes change in terms of recruiting, but that's been a good area for us, and I think it's going to be a good one in this particular game being out there." The Irish can open practices to coaches in New York, but not players, according to Kelly. • Notre Dame and Rutgers players will receive a variety of unspecified New Era products as their allowed bowl gift. The NCAA allows each bowl to award up to $550 worth of gifts to 125 participants per school.
