OLYMPIC SPORTS Penn State to host 3 NCAA championships Penn State has been awarded three national championship competitions, the NCAA announced in December. In addition, the university will host three predetermined regional championships. University Park will be the site of the 2016 National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championships, marking the sixth time in school history that Rec Hall has played host to the event. The four-team event will take place May 5-7, 2016. Penn State will also host the 2018 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships. Those events will take place on March 22-25 in the Multisport Building, marking the third time that venue has served as the host site. The Penn State Blue and White Golf Courses will host NCAA men's and women's cross country regional championships twice. The first, during the 2014-15 athletic campaign, will take place on Nov. 14, 2014. The second, dur- ing the 2016-17 year, is set for Nov. 11, 2016. The 2017-18 women's gymnastics regional championships will take place in Rec Hall, as well. That event is scheduled for April 7, 2018. Women's basketball first and second rounds for 2014 are predetermined, and Penn State was previously listed as a host site. This event will be at University Park on March 23 and 25. For 2015, they will be at nonpredetermined sites and will take place on the campuses of the top 16 seeds for the 2015 tournament. A W A R D S W AT C H JOHN URSCHEL Football standout John Urschel was named the recipient of the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy on Dec. 10 at the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's 56th annual banquet in New York. A two-time first-team All-Big Ten honoree, Urschel is the first Penn State studentathlete to win the Campbell Trophy, which was first presented in 1990. The trophy is presented to the nation's premier college football scholar-athlete. "Words cannot describe how much this means to me," Urschel said. "I want to thank my coaches, teammates and fans for their love and support while at Penn State. I am grateful for playing in front of 108,000 fans – the best fans in college football." … Penn State All-Big Ten selection and co-captain DaQuan Jones was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2013 Nittany Lion football team. Jones was presented the Lions' Pride Outstanding Senior Player Award to highlight the State College Quarterback Club's annual banquet honoring the Nittany Lion football team. … Wide receiver Allen Robinson was named a Sporting News first-team All-American. The 2012 and '13 Big Ten Receiver of the Year, BWI file photo Robinson is Penn State's 98th firstteam All-America selection all-time. He is the 84th Penn State football student-athlete to earn first-team AllAmerica recognition, dating to W.T. (Mother) Dunn's selection to the Walter Camp All-America squad in 1906. Robinson was named a second-team All-American by Athlon Sports. … Women's soccer forward Maya Hayes was named an NSCAA second-team All-American. The announcement came three days after Hayes was selected as a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist. The senior is now a three-time NSCAA All-America honoree. … Brittany Grzywacz and Laura Gebhart were selected to the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I AllAmerican team. Both the senior defender and junior midfielder received second-team recognition. The 2013 season was the fourth in a row in which Penn State has had at least two players selected All-America performers. … Men's soccer standout Andrew Wolverton was named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Great Lakes first-team squad. Wolverton, who also won this year's Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year award, was the Nittany Lions' first All-Region honoree since 2010.
