Notre Dame's Jaylon Smith made 247Sports' True Freshman All-American squad after finishing the regular season third on the team in tackles with 61 (6.5 for lost yardage). Smith did not make Sporting News' Freshman AllAmerican team, but Rutgers' Steve Longa did with 111 stops (7.5 for lost yardage). With the Fighting Irish men's team capturing its first national championship Dec. 15, they joined North Carolina, Santa Clara and UCLA. It marked the fourth consecutive time the Fighting Irish have sold out for a postseason game: 2010 Sun Bowl (El Paso, Texas), 2011 Champs Sports Bowl (Orlando, Fla.), BCS National Championship Game (Miami) and 2013 Pinstripe Bowl (New York City). 26 Consecutive starts by sophomore cornerback KeiVarae Russell, the first defensive back at Notre Dame to start every game as a true freshman and sophomore since safety/cornerback Luther Bradley in 1973 and 1975 (Bradley sat out the 1974 season because of a suspension). Outside linebacker Jaylon Smith could duplicate Russell's achievement next season. 28 NCAA titles won by Notre Dame, most recently in men's soccer, the eighth different sport to finish No. 1 in NCAA Tournament or in football action. Football has 11 consensus national titles, followed by fencing (eight), women's soccer (three, most recently in 2010), men's tennis (two, most recently in 1959) and one apiece in golf (1944), cross country (1957), women's basketball (2001) and now men's soccer.
