WRESTLING PROFILE Adam Coon Bursts Onto The Scene When Adam Coon committed to the Michigan wrestling team, the expectations for his collegiate career were understandably high. While he was at Fowlerville (Mich.) High School, he posted an incredible 212-3 record, winning four straight Michigan state championships in the 215-pound division as a freshman and sophomore, and the 285-pound weight class as a junior and senior. On top of that, Coon won the 220-pound division freestyle championship at the 2011 FILA Cadet World Championship, claimed two consecutive USA Wrestling Junior Triple Crowns (capturing national titles in freestyle, Greco Roman and folkstyle wrestling in 2012-13), and was ranked the No. 1 overall recruit and the No. 1 heavyweight wrestler in the 2013 class by InterMat.com. Even after such wild success at that level, no one could have foreseen Coon's instant impact at Michigan. As of Jan. 20, Coon had yet to lose in his Michigan career, stringing together 23 straight wins — including a 9-0 mark in dual meets and a 14-0 tournament record. InterMat.com ranked him as the No. 1 heavyweight in the nation. In his short time with the Wolverines, Coon has already defeated some of the top opponents in his division. He beat No. 7 Spencer Myers of Maryland twice — in a Jan. 5 dual meet and in the semifinals of the Midlands Championships; took down No. 3 Bobby Telford of Iowa in the Midlands Championships final, winning the tournament title with a 5-0 record; and defeated No. 6 J.T. Felix Coon won the first 23 matches of his U-M career en route to being ranked as the No. 1 heavyweight in the nation by InterMat.com. On Jan. 19 in his sternest test of the season, Coon beat two-time NCAA champion and No. 2-ranked Tony Nelson of Minnesota 4-2 in overtime to clinch No. 13 Michigan's 19-14 dual meet win over the No. 3 Golden Gophers. "It's definitely a pleasant surprise, just the winning aspect of it and seeing the gains I have accomplished in my wrestling technique," Coon said. "I didn't expect to be having the success that I am or as much growth as I have. It's a testament to the practice partners and coaches we have.
