Alton twins
return to lineup
against Purdue
They each had off-season shoulder
surgery, which caused Andrew Alton and
Dylan Alton to miss the first half of Penn
State's dual meet season.
But the twin brothers made their debut
in the Nittany Lions' starting lineup Jan.
12 against Purdue, and both marked their
return with victories.
At 149 pounds, Andrew hung on for a
7-6 win over Brandon Nelson – despite
having to stop the bout in the third period to tend to an injured shoulder (opposite from the surgically repaired shoulder). Dylan followed his brother up with
a 6-1 victory while compiling 2:37 of riding time against Dustin Schultz.
Andrew said he felt "a little nervous"
heading into the Purdue dual, adding
that "I need to get more mentally prepared" for future bouts. Dylan said of the
layoff, "We were patient. Now we're
ready to go.
"
Before their dual meet debut, the twins
competed in the Wilkes Open Dec. 28, a
tournament in which Andrew finished 30 and Dylan 2-0. Dylan also competed in
the Franklin and Marshall Open Jan. 4,
finishing 4-0.
"It was good to see the Altons back in
there and that's part of the process for
them, Penn State coach Cael Sanderson
"
said. "As you can see, they're not 100
percent [conditioningwise] yet. We knew
that, but we've got to get them out there
and see what they can do because we're
running out of time."
