BY DAN MURPHY I t was the first and only Friday night in Carrollton's 16-week season that the Trojans had no scheduled games. Head coach Rayvan Teague and mem- bers of his staff locked up the school's stadium and prepared to ship out to scout future opponents near the Geor- gia-Alabama border. When Teague pulled away, he stopped to watch an intruder break into the recently secured stadium — but just shook his head and kept driving. The trespasser was senior Tyler Newsome, Carrollton's all-state kicker, hopping the fence with his big bag of tees and balls to get in a little extra work. "I had already made my way out there and I just had to find a way to get on the field, I guess," Newsome said. Teague has sent each of his last four kickers to a college football program, but said none has worked as hard as Newsome to get there. This year, six Carrollton seniors earned scholarship offers to play at the next level. None of them spent as much time in the weight room as Newsome. "He probably would be our offsea- son award winner because he works out harder and more intensely than anybody else on the team," Teague said. Newsome works out in the weight room at least once a day and kicks as often as he can without wearing out his right leg. He's kicked regularly since middle school and started at- tending national kicking camps and competitions when he took the start- ing job as a sophomore in high school. This year, Teague let him structure practices for himself and the other kickers, and the coach said Newsome created drills that kept him busy for all three hours of practice on a daily basis. On most weekends, the lanky 6-3, Hard Work Lands Tyler Newsome A Rare Full Ride Newsome made 19 of 22 career field goal attempts while continuing a tradition of successful kickers at Carrollton High School in Georgia.
