Ten school – Penn State – swooped in
and got his signature.
WHO OPENED THE DOOR James Franklin was
the key factor in Campbell's decision,
with an assist from co-defensive coordi-
nator Brent Pry. Franklin had recruited
Campbell while at Vanderbilt.
QUOTABLE Campbell on his senior season
(via Peegs.com): "I felt like I played well.
I had to play through a back injury that
bothered me the whole season, and I
thought I did pretty good with that. It
wasn't a real serious injury, but it was
painful and I just had to play through it.
As the season went along, I thought my
footwork and my speed really got better."
PHIL'S TAKE Campbell could be one of the
real surprises in Penn State's class. He
was somewhat limited last season due to
his health but was an All-Area performer
as a junior. He has 4.5-second 40-yard
speed, a 34-inch vertical leap and great
closing speed. At 6-1, he looks to have
the kind of frame that could carry 200
pounds by his sophomore year, and he
could be an immediate contributor on
special teams. I expect him to begin his
Penn State career at either free safety or
strong safety. He's superb in the open
8eld and has great acceleration.
