Five-year Michigan placekicker Bren- dan Gibbons was permanently sepa- rated from the University of Michigan Dec. 20 for violating the Univer- sity's Student Sexual Misconduct Policy, according to reports in The Michigan Daily. The student newspaper indicated it had re- viewed documents from the uni- versity creating the separation. According to the Daily, the uni- versity's Office of Student Con- flict Resolution informed him of the decision in a letter dated Dec. 19, 2013. The matter developed from an incident reported to have taken place in Novem- ber 2009. Gibbons, a freshman on the football team at that time, was not charged with any crime. According to the Daily report: "Investigators in the university's Office of Institutional Equity, which reviews in- ternal complaints of sexual assault, work with a lower standard of evidence than that of criminal prosecutors, who must prove that a defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. OIE may presume that a respondent engaged in alleged conduct if there is a 'preponder- ance of evidence' against the individual. This standard states that a respondent is responsible if there is enough evidence to suggest a complaint is more likely true than not." Gibbons did not play in the Ohio State football game Nov. 30, with Michigan head coach Brady Hoke indicating he was injured. Gibbons met with OSCR officials Dec. 4 to discuss OIE's findings, according to the report. Following the official separation Dec. BRENDAN GIBBONS SEPARATED FROM U-M PRIOR TO BOWL GAME GIBBONS
