M ichigan absorbed a gut punch and a little bit of comfort all in the same afternoon Feb. 16. The Wol- verines dropped a home game to Wis- consin (75-62), plunging them momen- tarily out of first place in the Big Ten. It hurt, knowing they didn't have a game to spare in the neck-and- neck contest for the league lead with Michigan State. About an hour later, the Spartans came up with a bigger stunner. MSU's 60-51 home loss to Nebraska sent shockwaves through East Lansing, and knotted the Spar- tans and Wolverines once again at the top of the Big Ten. It also underscored the postgame take on the league from Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. "It's still 12 teams, the last time I looked," Ryan offered. "There are teams in the first eight spots, and if you tell me the four teams below that — nine, 10, 11, 12 — that they're not good, that they can't beat you? I've never seen it like this. "And that's in eight years as an assistant, too, from '76-84. What I'm saying is, who knows?" U-M head coach John Beilein knows it's no time to stop and lick your wounds. "I'm not going to beat our guys up for effort," Beilein said. "Our guys played hard, as hard as they could play, I believe.
