MICHIGAN HOCKEY On The Rise — Junior Zach Hyman: A prolific scorer before he arrived at Michigan, Hyman netted just six goals in 79 games during his first two seasons, often playing the role of third‑ or fourth‑line checking forward. In the last eight games, however, he's discovered his offensive rhythm, netting four goals and three assists to give him five in each category in 26 games overall. A terrific de‑ fensive forward also, Hyman has a plus/minus of plus‑four in the eight contests. Top Freshman — Tyler Motte: While Compher has demanded the spotlight, Motte is enjoying a nice rookie campaign also. The natural left winger is fifth on the team with seven goals and seventh with 13 points. He had two goals and two assists, and was plus‑4, during U‑M's most recent eight‑game stretch. Series To Watch — vs. Minnesota March 14-15: When this series was an‑ nounced last summer, many expected it could determine the Big Ten regular‑ season title. When February started it very much looked like that could be the case, with U‑M just six points back of the Gophers while possessing two games in hand. However, a Minnesota sweep of Michigan Feb. 14‑15 has dropped the Maize and Blue to 12 points back and the league crown is almost gone. Still, if U‑M can win six in a row, it would trail Minnesota by just six points and could tie the Gophers with a sweep at Yost. — Michael Spath In an eight-game stretch from Jan. 23 to Feb. 15, junior center Zach Hyman tallied four goals and three assists.
