PREP PROFILES Dexter Williams of Orlando, Fla., had an outstanding day at a Nike SPARQ (a measure of overall strength and fit- ness) Combine in early February. He produced the top score at the event with a 117.03, run- ning a 4.55-second 40-yard dash and a 4.08-second 5-10- 5-yard shuttle, re- cording a 40-inch vertical leap and tossing the power ball 35 feet. His score stood second in the na- t i o n t h r o u g h mid-March with five Nike SPARQ events in the books. The scholarship of- fers have poured in since his showing. "It's great," Williams said. "Get- ting offered by powerhouse programs like Ohio State and now tradition-rich Notre Dame, I can't even explain the feeling." Williams received his first eight of- fers in the month of February from schools like Florida, Miami, USC and Georgia. Notre Dame's offer wasn't one he was expecting. "I was really surprised because there weren't any letters or anything," Wil- liams said. "One of my old coaches told me to call Notre Dame right away because they had just called. Coach Tony Alford and I had a real long con- versation. We have a great connection especially because he has coached a bunch of Florida running backs be- fore." Williams has been discussing the Irish with one of his favorite teach- ers. "I actually talk to my first pe- riod teacher about Notre Dame a lot," he said. "She went there, and she al- ways tells me that they should offer me. She was ex- cited when I told her." Williams said he is looking for a pro- gram that will give him a lot of play- ing time and a strong degree in sports communication. Williams has been training hard three times a week with his strength and conditioning coach, adding 11 pounds to his 6-0, 192-pound frame. Williams said they is no order to his favorites, but Notre Dame is definitely in his top five. He plans to narrow down his choices in the spring. As a junior, Williams rushed 174 times for 1,072 yards and four touch- downs at Orlando Olympia High School. He transferred to West Orange in February of this year. — Staci Gasser Florida Running Back Appreciates Notre Dame Offer DEXTER WILLIAMS ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ West Orange High School Orlando, Fla.
