The winner of the single- elimination tournament receives the league's automatic NCAA tourney berth. Penn State will be the sixth seed and will play the third seed in the %rst round for the right to face the regular-season's No. 2 %nisher in the semi%nals. Playing only their second season of varsity competition, the Nittany Lions will be decided underdogs, but the beauty of the postseason is that everyone starts with a blank slate. She was 81 years old. McTarsney helped the Lions to an 85-66-1 mark during her 15 years at the helm (1965-72, 1974-80). She led Penn State to the first postsea- son appear- ance in program his- tory in 1975 with a berth in the Penn- sylvania tournament and brought the Nittany Lions to the Eastern As- sociation of Intercolle- giate Athlet- ics for Women (EAIAW) tournament in 1978. For her contributions, McTarsney was honored by Penn State with an invitation to deliver the opening speech for the Women's History Month Series for the Penn State All- Sports Museum in 2011. A native of Johnson County, Ind., McTarsney was a graduate of Center Grove High School and earned her bachelor's degree from Butler Uni- versity. She went on to earn her master's degree in health and phys- ical education from the University of Iowa and her Ph.D. in motor learning from the University of Oregon. McTarsney is survived by her sis- ter, Shirley (DeWane) Calvert; nephews Tony and Mark Calvert; and several great-nieces and nephews. ■ PAT McTARSNEY Penn State Athletics
