NCAAs Penn State turned in its best per- formance at the NCAA champi- onships in more than a decade, posting 63 total points over the course of the three-day competition in Austin, Texas, to finish in 17th place. The 63 points are the second-most Penn State has ever recorded, with the 2001 team being the only one to record more (72.5). The 17th-place team finish is tied for fifth-best in Nittany Lion history. "Our objective was to come here and compete with the top teams in the country, and I think we did that," head coach Tim Murphy said follow- ing the meet's conclusion on March 29. "It's a good step for this program, and I am proud of the way our guys competed over the three days." Shane Ryan made history for Penn State. The sophomore from Haver- town, Pa., raced to a fourth-place finish in the "A" final of the 100 freestyle with a time of 42.32 sec- onds to earn the team 15 points. Ryan qualified for the "A" final in the pre- lims earlier in the day with a time of 42.13. With the top-eight finish, Ryan became the first Nittany Lion to achieve first-team All-America ac- colades in the 100 freestyle event. He is only the second Penn State swimmer to reach the "A" final in any freestyle event, with the first coming in 1944 when Abel Gilbert finished in the top eight in the 220, 440 and 1,500 freestyle events. Earlier in the championships, Ryan posted the best finish in Penn State history in the 100 backstroke, fin- ishing in 44.78 seconds to place sec- ond. He shattered his own program record of 45.13, which he set a month earlier at the Big Ten cham- pionships. ■
