BY WHITELAW REID V IRGINIA WOMEN'S lacrosse head coach Julie Myers had her work cut out in recruiting Courtney Swan, whose parents, brother and sister all went to Florida. Even after Swan decided that she did want to go to UVa, she had to sell her parents on the idea. "At first, they did want me to go to Florida, just because of [the ties] and the fact it would be a lot easier for them to get there," Swan said. "But toward the end of the process, they realized how great of a school UVa was and really wanted me to go here just to do something different. "And [now] they love that I came here. Even though it's a lot of travel, they love coming up and just exploring UVa and all the tradition that it has." Myers couldn't be happier that she was able to get Swan out of the Sunshine State. Myers said the Vero Beach native is a "fierce competitor." Last season, Swan had 83 draw controls, which ranked as the second-best single-season total in program history. She was third on the team in goals with 28, including a season-high four against William & Mary. This season, the third-year attack player has picked right up where she left off. Through 11 games, she was leading the team in draw controls (59) and assists (13), and ranked second in goals (31). "She's one of the hardest workers in everything she does," Myers said. "She challenges herself in everything she does and has really high expecta- tions for herself and is willing to work as hard as she needs to be the best." Team captains Ashlee Warner and Maddy Kees- han concur. "She's a really hard worker and has a lot of skill," Warner said. "She always finds a way to get open. "And she does really well on the draw. She's athletic and boxes out and gets her hands in there." Keeshan said as soon as Swan arrived at Vir- ginia she could tell she was a strong player and great athlete, but what really set her apart was her work ethic. "During practices and games you can see how hard she tries," Keeshan said. "And whether it's on the field or off the field, she's just a great teammate who really puts her heart and soul into the team."
