It will go down in the record books as a 37-point romp, but this year's Blue-White Game, won by the starter-laden Blue squad, 37-0, was in many ways a defensive struggle. Christian Hackenberg barely played, Zach Zwinak and Bill Belton com- bined for one carry and both offenses moved the ball in fits and starts in Penn State's spring finale Saturday aAernoon in Beaver Stadium. "I think the defense is ahead, I don't think there's any doubt about that," coach James Franklin said following his on-field debut with the Nittany Lions. "It was either that, or we really wanted to work on our punting game. "We've got a lot of work to do," he added. "I think our defense is slightly ahead. C O M THE GAME AT A GLANCE GOOD NEWS Penn State's first-team defense looked sharp in the spring game, holding the White to minus-25 yards rushing and 50 yards overall in a shutout win. The White managed only three first downs, and one of those was by penalty. BAD NEWS James Franklin said that offensive lineman Anthony Alosi has been suspended indefinitely. Alosi was charged with simple assault and harassment earlier this week in connection with a Jan- uary altercation in downtown State Col- lege. THE TAKEAWAY The most positive sign for Penn State may have been the attendance: 72,000. The weather, which ap- proached 70 degrees, surely had something to do with the high turnout, but it was also possible to view it as a sign that fans are feel- ing hopeful once again about the program's fu- ture.
