BASKETBALL RECRUITING BY CHRIS BALAS M ichigan received one pledge April 19 when Allentown (Pa.) Central Catholic's Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman, a Rivals.com three- star prospect, com- mitted to the pro- gram following his visit, and the U-M coaches might not be finished just yet. Th ey offered an - other guard the same weekend in Aubrey Dawkins, the son of former Duke great and current Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins and a 6-4, 1 8 0 - p o u n d w i n g at New Hampton School, a prep school in New Hampshire. Michigan head coach John Beilein visited the school April 11 and was apparently impressed with what he saw out of Dawkins in an open gym, so much so that he invited the Rivals.com three-star prospect to take a visit as soon as possible. Dawkins was initially slated to visit Dayton on the weekend of April 18, but he moved the trip to Ann Arbor to first on his plate. He was excited to get to know Beilein, his staff and his players better. "He watched me play pickup ball," Dawkins reported. "Later he said I reminded him a bit of [former Wolverine, now with the New York Knicks] Tim Hardaway Jr. I didn't know a whole lot about them, but I do know it's a good, s t ro n g b a s k e t b a l l program with a great coach." Dawkins describes himself as a player who "isn't overly great at anything, but really good at a lot of things." He's athletic, shoots the ball well, has a high basketball IQ and can guard many po- sitions, an "unself- ish, win at all costs player." He averaged 13 points during his prep year after playing at Palo Alto (Calif.) High, and he excelled at times to earn mention from Rivals.com na- tional recruiting analyst Eric Bossi at the National Prep Showcase last November in New Haven, Conn. "Also playing well for New Hamp- ton was Aubrey Dawkins," Bossi wrote. "He has stretched out to about 6-4 and added to his game.
