52 ■ THE WOLFPACKER backs, [they] all had a very solid spring," Doeren said. "Ball security was very good." NCSU also had to patchwork its offen- sive line a little compared to what it may look like at the start of the season. Junior center Quinton Schooley, a returning starter, missed most of spring with a knee injury that is not serious enough to likely cost him any preseason camp time. In his place, freshman Tony Adams, another early enrollee, saw most of the snaps at first-string center. NC State should also get fifth-year senior Rob Crisp back at left tackle. Crisp missed almost all of last season with an injury, but was granted a medical redshirt and is return- ing to the team in the summer. "That'll help us once we get him in shape, ready to play," Doeren noted. In Crisp's place, fifth-year senior Andy Jomantas played left tackle in the spring. Crisp and Jomantas will enable NCSU to keep redshirt junior Joe Thuney on the inte- rior of the line for what Doeren hopes will be a permanent basis. Thuney started at left guard in the spring game after playing left tackle for most of last season. Returning starter Alex Barr, a redshirt ju- nior, was back at right guard before a minor ankle injury cut his scrimmage short. Red- shirt freshman Cole Blankenship took Barr's place in the lineup when he went down. Fifth-year senior Tyson Chandler, whom Doeren noted was in the best shape of his career, left spring in line to be a three-year starter at right tackle. For Canada, spring was a good develop- mental period for his offense. Now he hopes for a little better luck to go with continued improvement. "Last year was a challenging year," he admitted. "Every week it was like we had somebody else out. We never really got into a rhythm, from quarterbacks going back and forth to up front. We were playing musical chairs there for a good part of the start of the year. The receivers were the same way. We had some guys making plays, and they'd get hurt. Just having everybody through the spring and letting them get better, for the most part we were able to have a pretty healthy spring that allowed us to get some continuity. "I think we're going to be better at all of it. I think we'll run it better, I think we'll throw it better. I think we'll be better at everything. What we'll focus on and what will be our strength, I'm not ready to say that. We'll get into the season and see how we develop, but I do think we'll be better in all aspects." ■ True freshman wide receiver Bo Hines made 10 catches for 132 yards in the Kay Yow Spring Game.
