T H E M O N T H I N . . . Franklin has focused on the far future, the years after the 2014 season, noting that it will take a while to right the ship back into the Top 25 and higher. That would be reasonable even if there hadn't been a scandal, sanctions and an early exit by Bill O'Brien. After all, the last time Penn State was No. 1 in the rankings – any time, not just at season's end – was in 1997. Christian Hackenberg was 2 years old. MIKE POORMAN STATECOLLEGE.COM [Cole] Chiappialle's compass has no east or west, only south, as in straight downhill. He conceivably could be a change-up back in the manner of a diminu- tive Zwinak, someone to insert for a few carries against tiring defenses in the second or fourth quarters, a clock eater who won't get tricky and, hopefully, hangs onto the ball no matter the hits absorbed. DAVID JONES PENNLIVE.COM I've never been at a place where you get 75,000 at the spring game. That's in- credible. What I saw out there today gave me chills. I can only imagine what a regular-season game day is like. This really is Happy Valley, man. BOB SHOOP PENN STATE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR We talkin' bout practice! HERB HAND @CoachHand Just weighed 281! Finally getting up to lineman weight! In addition to winning the William V. Campbell Trophy, which goes to college football's top scholar-athlete, and putting himself in position to hear his name called in the upcoming NFL Draft, the third- team All-America offensive guard was re- cently named the recipient of the 84th James E. Sullivan Award, presented by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) to the country's top amateur athlete. Chosen from a pool of 19 semifinalists, Urschel accepted the award April 11 at the AAU National Headquarters in Or- lando, Fla. The other finalists were Florida track and field athlete Cory Ann McGee and Nebraska volleyball player Kelsey Robinson. Urschel is the second winner of the Sullivan Award in Penn State history, joining Olympic track champion Horace Ashenfelter, who earned the award in 1952. Women's volleyball All-American Megan Hodge was the university's most recent finalist after leading Penn State to a fourth consecutive national champi- onship in 2010. W I N T E R S P O R T S PSU athletes saluted for academic showing A school-record 65 Penn State student- athletes from eight winter teams have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.
