Consecutive starts by Chicago Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija, an All-American wide receiver at Notre
Dame in 2005-06, from opening day through May 11 in which he gave up three or fewer earned
runs each time but did not get a win. That has not ever occurred in MLB history (dating back to 1876),
according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Samardzija began this season 0-3 while posting a phenomenal 1.45
ERA (nine earned runs in 56 innings pitched) — the second best in Major League Baseball as of May 12.

year, and center Devereaux Peters was No. 3 (Min-
nesota) and guard Natalie Novosel No. 8
(Washington) in 2012.
