2014 BASKETBALL RECRUITING ISSUE BY CHRIS BALAS Sacramento (Calif.) Capital Chris- tian power forward and Michigan signee D.J. Wilson spent much of his high school career out of the spot- light, often seen but rarely noticed. Part of that could be attributed to the plethora of talent in California, and a back injury that slowed him for most of the AAU season following his ju- nior year contributed to the lack of recognition. Yet when you're good, people usu- ally notice you. U-M head coach John Beilein and his staff were among those who found Wilson in the sum- mer before his senior season. The 6-9 then-205-pounder with a 7-3 wing- span didn't make it off campus dur- ing his official visit, pledging to the Power Forward D.J. Wilson Is Brimming With Potential D.J. They Said It Assistant Coach Jeff Meyer: "That young man is always in the gym. It's what he does. And like a lot of our kids, he's got a chip on his shoulder. He felt he was under valued, that coaches would come and watch and not notice him as much as other guys he was play- ing against. Coach [LaVall] Jordan did a good job building a relationship, and when I went and talked to him he had that presence, drive and vision where he wants to go, very similar to some of the other kids who have come through here." Rivals.com Analyst Eric Bossi: "He's a kid I always liked but never had got- ten to see either healthy or in extended viewing. Getting a chance to see him 100 percent and in more detail made the difference. He's tall, a pretty good athlete, another in that class who is highly skilled with the ball and can step out. He has an ideal college 'four' game right now."
