"I don't follow stuff like that," said Wilson, a 24-year-old right-hander who was born in Lynchburg, Va., and grew up in Midlothian, Va. "Some of those [listings] may hold water for some [people]. The most important thing is to come out and compete every day. Guys that throw 95 miles per hour are jumping off the page. "Each day I go out to win. That is the only thing I care about." That has been evident early in the 2014 season for the Bowie (Md.) Baysox starter, who was among the Double-A East- ern League's leaders for wins as of June 2. In his first 11 starts he was 5-5 with a 4.31 ERA and he posted an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 63 to 18. Wilson was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week April 28. "He commands the baseball," said Brian Graham, the director of player development for the Orioles. "He commands the baseball down in the strike zone. This year, his velocity is up a tick and he has more life on the slider." Wilson began last season in the Class A Advanced Carolina League at Frederick, where he was 1-1 with a 4.48 ERA in 11 starts. He was then promoted to Bowie, where he went 7-5 with a 3.83 ERA in 16 starts. "I have learned a lot," Wilson said. "That is the whole point of the minor leagues; get better in one regard or another. That is what I think I have taken from the first three years [of pro ball]. "It has led me to where I am now. Ultimately, the big leagues; that is your goal." — David Driver ◆ Photo by Bert Hindman/courtesy Bowie Baysox i30.CP-Tyler Wilson.indd 53 6/3/14 2:45 PM
