Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cava- lier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Nathan Kirby ◆ Baseball The second-year left-handed pitcher will play for the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer. He is the eighth Cavalier player to earn the prestigious honor, and first since Branden Kline in 2011. Kirby was a nominee for the 2014 Golden Spikes award, was tabbed as a first-team Louisville Slugger All- American and was named ACC Co-Pitcher of the Year. Heading into the NCAA Tournament, he was 8-1 with a 1.48 ERA, and he led the ACC in ERA and opponent batting average (.180) while ranking third in wins and fifth in strikeouts (93). Kirby also tossed a no-hitter at Pittsburgh April 4 — the school's fifth in the last 50 years. The outing included 18 strikeouts, which was just one away from the school and ACC single-game records. Stephanie Nauta ◆ Tennis The second-year from Galveston, Texas, clinched Virginia's first-ever ACC title in women's tennis with a three-set win at No. 3 singles. Nauta was ranked 62nd nationally going into the match, but upset No. 35 Hanna Mar of Duke to give the Wahoos a 4-2 victory and a school-record 21st win on the year. The Cavaliers set school records in 2014 with 24 wins, their sixth straight NCAA Tournament bid and a No. 3 overall seed. They also advanced further than ever be- fore by reaching the national quarterfinals. Georgia Ratcliff ◆ Rowing The Falls Church, Va., native was named the ACC Freshman of the Year while helping her squad to its fifth consecutive league championship; the Cavaliers have now won 14 of the 15 confer- ence regattas. UVa mentor Kevin Sauer also claimed ACC Coach of the Year honors, while the varsity eight — which Ratcliff was a part of — was named the ACC Crew of the Year. Additionally, four fourth- years — Sarah Jordan, Brandy Herald, Elle Murray and Fiona Schlesinger — were named All-ACC first team. Lindsay Shoop ◆ Rowing The former Cavalier was one of 17 athletes and coaches inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame May 31. The 2004 graduate was in- cluded in the newest class thanks to her role on the 2008 Olympic cham- pion U.S. women's eight. During her time in Charlottesville, Shoop was a two- time All-American and won multiple medals as part of the U.S. National Team. Jake Snyder ◆ Football The 2013 team captain was named to the 2014 National Football Foun- dation & College Hall of Fame Hamp- shire Honor Society in late April. To be selected, the player has to main- tain a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout his college career. The four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at defensive end graduated in 2013 with a degree in environmental sciences. On the field, he notched 149 tackles with 17.5 coming behind the line of scrimmage. The Minnesota Vikings signed him as an undrafted free agent in May. hoo's hot i11-14.Cavalier Sports.indd 6 6/3/14 4:40 PM
