30 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2014 FOOTBALL PREVIEW M Michigan Falls Behind Notre Dame In Winning Percentage For the first time since the third week of the 2005 season, Michigan finds itself looking up at Notre Dame in the race to be college football's most proficient program all time. With the Wolverines going 7-6 and the Fighting Irish 9-4 this past, ND has supplanted U-M in winning percentage by a margin of .00057. Notre Dame has taken advantage of a six-year stretch in which Michigan has accumulated a 41-35 record, good for a winning percentage of only .539. Had U-M maintained its century pace of .732, it would have posted 14 more victories over the past six seasons. Boise State, which only began playing Division I-A football in 1996, sits third, while Big 12 and Big Ten powers Okla- homa and Ohio State, respectively, occupy the fourth and fifth slots. Fresh off a 13-1 campaign, Michigan State made the biggest one-year jump in winning percentage, moving up four spots to No. 25 while South Ala- bama fell nine positions as its limited sample size began correcting itself. Michigan still maintains a 36-victory margin over third-place Notre Dame in all-time NCAA wins and is 35 wins up on No. 2 Texas. Penn State once sat in the top 10 in both wins and winning percent- age but saw 112 victories from 1998-2011 vacated by the NCAA, stem- ming from the Jerry Sandusky scandal that rocked the State College campus in 2011-12. PSU now rests in 12th in both categories. Ohio State And Michigan Are Top Two In All-Time Big Ten Standings After a brief run atop the Big Ten standings for one season, Nebraska has settled into third following a 5-3 campaign in 2013, elevating Ohio State and Michigan back into the top two, where they have stood for almost five decades. U-M actually dropped a few decimal points in winning percentage after going 3-5 last season in league games, falling further behind the Buckeyes, who were a perfect 8-0 during conference play. The biggest gainer was Michigan State thanks to its 8-0 record last year, but the Spartans are still a distant fifth overall. Wisconsin, meanwhile, is slowly climbing towards the .500 mark, but is still down 27 games in the loss column, it will take quite a few more 6-2 campaigns before the Badgers reach that milestone. Indiana, on the other hand, is just trying to hit the 200-victory level, having inched closer with a 3-5 record in 2013. All-Time Big Ten Standings School Years G W L T Pct.
