M ichigan reigned as the Big Ten's top athletic department from 1997-98 through 2004-05, recording top-six Director's Cup finishes every year. Over the past nine years, U-M has enjoyed some strong seasons — top-five efforts in 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2012-13 — but also placed 24th in 2005-06, 25th in 2009-10 and 15th in 2011-12. In 2013-14, Michigan was poised to reclaim its standing within the conference, closing the winter sports term in fourth place in the all-encompassing Director's Cup, but after failing to place in five of 11 spring sports, the Maize and Blue finished the year in 13th place nationally. That finish does mark the fourth straight year Michigan has finished in the top 15, while the Wolverines ranked second overall in the Big Ten behind Penn State (No. 5) and third in the Midwest after Notre Dame took third.
