Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cava- lier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Lyberty Anderson ◆ Golf The incoming first-year from Ches- terfield, Va., notched a 4-and-3 victory over future teammate Lauren Cough- lin, a rising third-year, in the 18-hole match play final of the 89th Virginia State Golf Association Women's Ama- teur Championship on July 11. She won four matches in five days to secure her first title and deny Coughlin her third straight VSGA Women's Amateur crown. Among her many other accomplishments, Anderson was the Virginia State Golf Association's Co-Women's Golfer of the Year for 2013. Makenzy Doniak ◆ Soccer The third-year forward from Chino Hills, Calif., was one of 21 players named to the United States' squad for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Aug. 5-24 in Canada. Doniak, a first-team NSCAA All-American in 2013, has tallied 30 goals and added 14 assists in her first two seasons at UVa. The United States is the reigning FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup champion, having won the 2012 title in Japan. That team, led by Virginia head coach Steve Swanson, featured fourth-year midfielder Morgan Brian. Denny McCarthy ◆ Golf The third-year from Rockville, Md., finished sixth at the NCAA Champi- onships in late May for the second- best finish in program history by an individual competitor, and he has been racking up the awards ever since. McCarthy, who was the ACC Championships run- ner-up and finished the 2013-14 campaign with a stroke average of 70.38, ranked eighth in the final Golfstat individual rankings and earned second- team All-America laurels from PING and Golfweek, in addition to being named the VaSID Golfer of the Year. Courtney Swan ◆ Lacrosse After helping the Cavaliers re - bound from a 10-8 regular season and reach the national semifinals in late May, the third-year attacker was named the VaSID Player of the Year. The Vero Beach, Fla., native was a second-team All-ACC pick and a second-team All- America honoree after she finished 16th nationally with 80 points. Swan also ranked 15th in draw controls (4.57 per game) and received the Elite 89 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the NCAA Championships. Brandon Waddell ◆ Baseball T h e s e c o n d - y e a r l e f t - h a n d e r helped the Cavs bounce back from a heart-breaking 9-8 loss in the open- ing game of the College World Series finals with a remarkable complete game effort in game two against eventual champion Vanderbilt. The Houston native, who finished the season 10-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 18 starts, allowed just one earned run on five hits in the 7-2 victory that forced a winner- take-all finale. Waddell was the first Virginia hurler to ever throw a complete game in the CWS, but the Cavs dropped another one-run contest in the next game to bring a close to the most successful campaign in program history. hoo's hot
