BY SHANE METTLEN T HE NFL DRAFT, WITH A Cavalier chosen every year since 1983, has be- come something of an annual show- case for the Virginia football program. This year, when the Washington Red- skins took Morgan Moses in the third round, it also served as an advertisement for the kind of heights UVa's athletics academic affairs office can help a player reach. Moses' journey from struggling high school stu- dent to Virginia graduate and NFL player has been well documented. He originally committed to play for the Cavaliers as a senior at Meadowbrook High School in the Richmond area, but didn't qualify academically. That led to a post-graduate year at Fork Union Military Academy before he eventually signed with UVa again. Of course that was just one step in the challenge for Moses, who faced a tough road to an anthropology degree. "I feel like I proved the world wrong," Moses told reporters before the NFL Draft. "It was very chal- lenging. UVa isn't an easy school, so one thing that I had to do while I was going through this process was stay in school and get my degree." While Moses is one of the more high-profile suc- cess stories, there have been many Virginia athletes who have benefited greatly from CAST, the Cavalier Academic Support Team. With the knowledge that UVa athletes won't be able to succeed on the field or on the court unless they excel in the classroom, CAST includes a staff of academic coordinators, tutors, a learning specialist and study hall monitors. "We work hard to monitor situations and make sure our student-athletes have the opportunity to succeed," said Adrien Harraway, Virginia's director of academic affairs. "The athletics academic affairs office is here to help our student-athletes." Harraway knows a thing or two about academic success. He became the associate athletics director for academic affairs in 2012 after working as a direc- tor for academic affairs for the Virginia football team since 2005.
