IT STARTS WITH YOU THE PATH TO SUCCESS Academics Preparation Competition Service Graduation Lifelong Success ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ LIFELONG SUCCESS It was February 1986 and I had just completed a whirlwind series of recruiting visits at a number of competitive schools. My father had always encouraged me to consider my choices as opportunities, and I was fortu- nate to have his as well as my mother's support and encouragement while I considered the athletic scholarships before me. I chose to commit to the University of Virginia and truly believe that it was absolutely the best deci- sion for me. My opportunity to attend UVa was significant and is an experience I've come to appreciate more with each passing year. My undergrad and grad years as a student-athlete in Charlottesville were amazing. I developed my mind and met my future wife. I made friendships that have endured for more than two decades and will likely last the rest of my life. I was privileged to participate in what 80-some young men and a focused football staff could build and accomplish together. As a student-athlete, there were a tremendous number of demands on my time. In season, I spent approximately 60 hours per week between practices, games, film time and other football obligations. On top of this full-time commitment, I took a full course load and put in the class and homework time those credits required of me. These competing demands provided excellent preparation for real life and a platform for future success. Today, I run a small company in Richmond called Studio Squared. It's a division of The Martin Agency. We program, sell and create all of the content for Walmart's in-store digital network. As I work with my team to reach our goals, I stand constantly upon the foundation of my experiences at UVa. There's a simple model for success, one with which every student-athlete I knew was familiar; goals plus hard work and perseverance equals success. That's true on the football field, in the classroom, in my business and in every worthy endeavor. To whom much is given, much is required, and I have been given much. Thank you, donors. As a former student-athlete, I have benefited from your generosity. I am therefore honored to serve on the board of the Virginia Athletics Foundation and pay it forward. If you are not yet a donor, please consider an investment in the VAF. It truly makes a difference in the lives of student-athletes. I am living proof! — Ron Carey Ron Carey, a four-time let- ter winner and tri-captain for the UVa football team, earned his Education degree in 1990. His diverse career has spanned from packaged goods and pharmaceuticals to media and advertising. While at the Richmond Times- Dispatch, he was selected as a "Top 20 Leader Under 40" by PRESSTIME Magazine. He joined the The Martin Agency in 2011 as SVP/Director of Human Resources and now serves as General Manager of Studio Squared. He is serving a second, three-year term on the Virginia Athletics Founda- tion Board of Trustees.
