cavalier profile ANTHONY HARRIS Fourth-Year • Football Ball-hawking safety Anthony Harris is a very unassum- ing young man. He's humble, yet has extremely evident leadership skills. Late last season during his third-year campaign the safety emerged as a team leader on Mike London's defense, and that role will expand in 2014 when Harris enters the season as one of the team's four captains. Those leadership skills and modest personality earned Harris the Gray-Carrington Memorial Scholarship, one of the highest honors given to a UVa student. Established in 1971 in memory of Arthur P. "Pete" Gray IV and expanded in 1987 to include Edward C. Carrington Jr., this award honors two outstanding alumni whose achievements have served as an inspiration to others. The scholarship is awarded to students who exhibit those traits that defined Pete Gray and Ed Carrington, including personal integrity, achievement, leadership and humility. Harris said what makes this award special is that it's not a sports award; it's an award that comes from the entire student body. "To be even nominated was definitely an honor," Harris said. "To know some of my peers really respected and looked up to me and my character and felt I deserved to be considered for the award meant a lot." Harris said winning the award was more than he could have expected. "To actually win meant that I accomplished not only some things on the football field but things within the social and academic community as well. It was a very humbling award," Harris said. "You go out on Saturdays and try to perform and have some success on the field, but for people to recognize who you are as a person outside of football and want to honor you, you want to embrace it." With football season nearing, Harris is focused on how he can be a more effective leader of the Cavalier defense. "I've been in the film room trying to help guys under- stand some of the things I've been able to pick up on," Harris said. "I've been really focused this summer on what can I do vocally or physically to help my team prepare and become a better defense." — Greg Waters ◆ Photo courtesy UVa
