Cornerback
If NC State is going to add a cornerback
in the class, it is going to be Mike Hughes
from New Bern (N.C.) High. The three-star
prospect rarely does interviews, especially
by phone, and thus his recruitment has
been difficult to track.
Hughes (5-10, 180 pounds) is rated as
the No. 50 cornerback nationally and the
No. 22 player in the state by Rivals.com.
He clocked a blazing 4.34 seconds in the
40-yard dash at a Shrine Bowl combine in
Washington, N.C., last June. He also re-
corded other impressive measurables there,
including a 10-foot-3 standing broad jump
and 25 reps at 185 pounds on the bench
press.
As a sophomore playing defensive back,
Hughes had 43 tackles, five interceptions
and 11 passes broken up. He transitioned to
quarterback last fall and completed 133 of
236 passes for 2,035 yards with 15 touch-
downs and eight picks. He also rushed 173
times for 1,244 yards and 27 scores.
This summer, Hughes is known to have
taken unofficial visits to NC State and UNC
— the two schools believed to be at the top
of his list. He also traveled to Florida prior
to his junior year and has talked of wanting
to visit South Carolina. Both schools had
verbally offered Hughes. ■
