BY GREG WATERS S econd-year outside hitter Jas- mine Burton was probably always destined to go to the University of Virginia. Burton was recruited by former Cav- alier volleyball coach Lee Maes, but nothing materialized in terms of offers or visits. But on a trip to California to watch two other players recruited by Maes' staff, new and current head coach Dennis Hohenshelt was ex- posed for the first time to Burton. He was impressed with her physical skills and power. "I said we don't have anyone like her," Hohenshelt said. Burton credits two UVa and former California teammates with enticing her to the East Coast. In high school, Burton played on a team that included current Cavalier twins Manon and Lauren Fuller. Burton said Manon played a huge factor in her recruiting. "She used to always come to practice and tell me how her visits went and how cool the coaches were," Burton recalled. "During her first year at UVa, we stayed in contact and she talked me into coming in for a visit. When Lauren transferred in I was so excited because they were my two favorite players on our team." After making an impression on her future coach, it didn't take Burton long to make an impact for the Cavaliers. In her first season as a Wahoo, Burton was named the ACC Freshman of the Year. As a right-side hitter, Burton was third on the team with 380 kills, 2.97 kills per set, 73 blocks and a .259 hitting percentage. The kills and kills per set marks rank fifth on UVa's first-year record list, while the hitting percentage is the seventh-best mark.
