Tranquill and his four tackles helped the Irish defense hold the Boilermakers to only 121 yards in a second-half shut- out. That defensive effort allowed Notre Dame to outgain Purdue 398-290 in total yards. Junior defensive end Romeo Ok- wara led the Irish with 11 tackles, while Smith added nine stops and two tackles for loss. Sophomore cornerback Devin Butler and senior linebacker Joe Schmidt each intercepted one Etling pass. The Purdue quarterback finished the evening with 234 yards and two touch- downs on 27-of-40 passing. Purdue se- nior running back Raheem Mostert ran for 47 yards on 14 carries. Notre Dame senior kicker Kyle Brin- dza concluded the Irish scoring with a 39-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter, his third of the game.
