IRISH WIN DESPITE MISSING SEVERAL PLAYERS For myriad reasons, Notre Dame played the majority of its 30-14 win over Purdue without a number of con- tributors on offense and defense. Outside of the five players held out while waiting a decision on the aca- demic fraud investigation — junior cornerback KeiVarae Russell, senior wide receiver DaVaris Daniels, senior defensive end Ishaq Williams, senior safety Ellar Hardy and fifth-year se- nior linebacker Kendall Moore — four players did not see any action due to injuries: freshman defensive end An- drew Trumbetti (head/neck injury), fifth-year senior right guard Christian Lombard (high ankle sprain), fifth- year senior safety Austin Collinsworth (strained MCL) and sophomore wide receiver Torii Hunter Jr. (groin tear). They were joined on the injury list mid-game by senior wide receiver Amir Carlisle (MCL strain), sopho- more cornerback Cole Luke (neck) and junior safety Nicky Baratti (shoulder). "We had some injuries today," head coach Brian Kelly said. "Guys stepped up and responded to that first sign of adversity that the team has to handle. I thought we did a great job after los- ing [sophomore safety] Max Redfield and then Nicky Baratti goes down the next play. "I am very pleased with the way we responded in some adverse condi- tions." During the second quarter, the Irish lost Redfield when he was ejected for targeting after a head-to-head hit on Purdue sophomore quarterback Danny Etling. The officials reviewed the play — like they do with all tar- geting calls — but upheld the ruling. Because Redfield's penalty occurred in the first half and not the second, he is eligible to play the entire Syracuse game Sept. 27. PURDUE GAME NOTES NOTRE DAME VS.
