FAN FORUM THE LAST WORD Perhaps the Irish should consider scheduling Michigan as a "warm-up game" for their game with Texas to start the 2015 season. David E. Jones, MD Vista, Calif. POLITICALLY INCORRECT In your Sept. 15, 2014, edition, Mr. Ed LaNeve of East Liverpool, Ohio, opened his diatribe on Father Jenkins and President Obama with, "As a 37- year veteran of the teaching profes- sion, please allow me to make sev- eral points concerning the 'academic fraud' at Notre Dame." As a 39-year veteran of the teaching profession, please allow me to voice the following: Mr. LaNeve attacks Fa- ther Jenkins for awarding an honorary degree to "abortionist" Barack Obama, yet he never offers one quote from Obama's speech to the Notre Dame class of 2009. I offer the following from the Presi- dent's address: "So let's us work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions, let's make adoption more avail- able. Let's provide care and support for women who do carry their children to term." LaNeve's insinuation that Father Jenkins committed a "grievous moral error" (euphemism for mortal sin) by allowing President Obama to speak at the 2009 commencement is tanta- mount to Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch Society, calling President Eisenhower a communist. Oh well, President Obama did make one glaring faux pas in his address — he praised Cardinal Bernardin, even calling him saintly. Now that in itself must have unhinged many a conserva- tive Catholic. Matt Hart Trenton, Mich. NO VACANCY The idea of "vacating" football vic- tories is beyond inanity. The past is past; you can't unring the bell. If we could, then we should review video that in some cases clearly shows incorrect calls by sports officials that determined the outcome of an event. Notre Dame and its fans celebrated the 31-0 victory over Michigan, the first shutout of the Wolverines in an NCAA-record 365 games. PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL
