M ichigan true freshman left tackle Mason Cole accomplished some- thing unprecedented in taking the field for the Wolverines' 2014 opener against Appalachian State Aug. 30. Not in the long history of Michigan football had a true freshman offensive lineman started the opening game. A number of true freshman offen- sive linemen have performed for the Wolverines in the past. Guard Kyle Bosch, on the present roster, was the most recent, garnering one start last season. The other true freshmen who started at least one game as a rookie are Justin Boren (2006), Dean Ding- man (1987), Tom Dixon (1980) and Bubba Paris (1978). As for Cole's effort, Michigan head coach Brady Hoke sounded pleased — at least for openers.
