sport at Penn State. But Harlow wasn't around to see it. A:er clashing continually with Bezdek over Bezdek's treatment of the players, Harlow le: for the head coaching job at Colgate in 1922. That was the spring- board that led to his enshrinement in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954 af- ter an ultra-successful career that also included a stop at Harvard and Western Maryland – where he coached another future Penn State head coach, Rip Engle. I've highlighted Mordecai Riddle, Dick Harlow to Christian Hackenberg, so, here, in chronological order, are some of the other prominent PSU players who have worn the No. 14 jersey: HARRY ROBB (1916-17, '19 – RB/QB) Despite playing in the shadow of 9rst- team All-Americans Charlie Way and Glenn Killinger, Robb continues to hold Penn State scoring records unlike his more famous peers. His six touchdowns and 36 points in one game in a 70-0 rout of Gettysburg his sophomore year are still the team standard. Robb also is responsible for the record 92-yard touchdown pass from Harold Hess to Bob Higgins that helped upset Pitt, 20- 0, in '19. As the quarterback, he called the touchdown play from a fake punt formation on Penn State's second pos- session without telling Coach Bezdek. Although elected co-captain in '18 he went into the Army and missed the sea- son, but returned to be one of the stars of the once-beaten '19 team and was se- lected a second-team All-American by the legendary Walter Camp. A:er grad- uating, Robb was a teammate of the great Jim Thorpe when the Canton Bull- dogs won NFL championships in '22 and '23. He later coached Canton and 9nished out his pro career as a coach and player with the famous Pottsville Maroons. JEFF DURKOTA (1942, '46-47 – FB /RHB) Durkota was one of the many standout players on the great '47 undefeated Cot- ton Bowl team that set several NCAA defensive records and 9nished the sea- son ranked No. 4 in the country.
