M . | S E P T. 2 4 | M A D I S O N , W I S . | E S P N 2 The Big Ten certainly knew what it was doing when it decided to launch its conference season by pitting Penn State against Wisconsin. The UW Field House is sure to be rock- ing as the Badgers look to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Nittany Lions in the NCAA champi- onship match last December. Ranked sixth in the preseason AVCA poll, Wisconsin returns six starters and 11 letterwinners, including talented sophomore setter Lauren Carlini. Coming o0 last year's runner-up /nish, coach Kelly She1eld hasn't had to talk to his team about setting goals. "I think everyone knows what they are," he said. how the game goes, I look forward to the next one because it's so much fun. The team only won eight games last year, but considering that there were so many close games, it didn't feel like only eight. I know people say you only won eight games. We lost because we weren't good enough to win them. That is the honest truth. We were playing in the Big Ten. These are the absolute monsters of college hockey. We weren't supposed to win any conference games. That is what is fun. If this were easy, it wouldn't mean as much. That is partly why you see the great pas- sion of not only the student body, but also the alumni and everybody here in Hockey Valley who love to come to the games. They know it is against the very best in the nation, and I love that competition. Which team do you think will become Penn State's biggest rival in Big Ten hockey? I don't know about rival. I think that this year, Minnesota is so good, so good. … They are going to be as good a college hockey team as you have ever seen. I'm not sure in terms of rivalries, but I know that in terms of measuring sticks that is going to be a heck of a game and se- ries. ■ WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Lions bounce back following rare loss After a heartbreaking loss to Stan- ford Sept. 5, Penn State put up a strong performance the following weekend at the Villanova Classic. En route to the two-day tourna- ment championship, PSU topped American, Villanova, Yale and Kansas, while surrendering only one set to American. ■ SCORECARD
