R Y A N   S N Y D E R | B L U E W H I T E I L L U S T R A T E D With roughly 30 prospects in atten- dance for Penn State's game vs. UMass, the group was highlighted by three solid Class of 2016 prospects. Five-star RahShaun Smith was the most notable of the bunch. The nation's No. 15 overall prospect, according to Rivals.com, Smith has been on campus a few times over the past two years, but this was his first game in Beaver Stadium since James Franklin and his staff were hired. Smith, who plays at St. Frances high school in Baltimore, currently holds more than 30 verbal scholarship offers, many of which are from the nation's top programs. Smith admits that there's still a ways to go in the process before he narrows his list, but schools like Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma are ex- pected to be a few of the programs that prove to be Penn State's top competitors. Another notable prospect who made his way to Beaver Stadium is Council Rock North quarterback Brandon Mcil- wain from Newtown, Pa. Going into this weekend, Mcilwain was one of three quarterbacks in the Class of 2016 that PSU is seriously targeting. The fi?h- ranked prospect in Pennsylvania, Mcil- wain has been to State College three times in the past six months, but he's also visited schools like Miami, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio State and South Carolina since the summer. Mcil- wain is expected to make his decision sometime a?er his junior season and be- fore the spring of 2015. At the moment, Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks ap- pear to be Penn State's top competitor. One additional name to note is offensive lineman Jauan Williams. The four-star from Archbishop Carroll in Washington, D.C., came to State College in the sum- mer for camp. At the time, that actually was his first unofficial visit to any school, but since then he's also checked out Ohio State and Maryland. In addition to the Class of 2016 prospects mentioned here, Penn State also hosted multiple players that are al- ready committed in the Class of 2015. Pittsburgh offensive lineman Sterling Jenkins, defensive back Ayron Monroe of Washington, D.C., and offensive line- man Ryan Bates and linebacker Jake Cooper of Warminster, Pa., were a few of the committed prospects who traveled to State College for the game against UMass.
