M . | N O V . 9 | R E C H A L L The Nittany Lions will begin their latest title defense against a familiar foe. They've faced Lehigh 102 times since 1911, more than any other opponent. Penn State holds a 65- 34-3 advantage in the all-time series, including a 29-6 romp in last year's regular-sea- son opener. But with individual national champs David Taylor and Ed Ruth having graduated, Cael Sanderson's squad has some rebuilding to do as it begins its quest for a 56h consecutive national championship. This year's matchup with the Mountain Hawks 5gures to be a bit more competitive than it was in 2013. FENCING Sintchinov named assistant coach Longtime international fencing coach Alexei Sintchinov has been named an assistant coach with the Penn State fencing teams. Sintchinov joins head coach Wes Glon's staff after three years as an assistant coach at Ohio State. Sintchinov has an extensive fencing resume and has been a profes- sional coach since 1976. He is also a Master of Sport in Fenc- ing. During his in- ternational coaching tenure, he was the head coach of the Belarus, Egypt and Tunisia na- tional teams. During his time with Belarus, Sintchinov was named Hon- ored Coach of Belarus in 1991. He was also the head coach of the 2000 Egyptian Olympic team. The new Nittany Lion assistant was a sought-after private and club coach from 2004-11 before making the move into collegiate coaching. He joined the Buckeyes' staff in 2011 and went on to spend three seasons in Columbus, helping guide Ohio State to the 2012 NCAA champi- onship. Sintchinov attended the Belaruss- ian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport with a specialty in coach- ing and teaching. Penn State, which won the national championship last season with Glon serving in an interim capacity, began its national title defense with the Nittany Lion Cup Open. The exhibi- tion event took place in the White Building on Oct. 4-5. ■ SINTCHINOV SCORECARD
