M ichigan likely won't play fresh- men who haven't played yet this year, preserving their redshirts, and that includes freshman quarter- back Wilton Speight. Redshirt junior Russell Bellomy took snaps for two series when fifth-year senior Devin Gardner went down in an 18-13 win over Penn State, and he'll likely re- main the third-string QB for the Wol- verines. Bellomy was promoted to second string because of sophomore backup Shane Morris' ankle injury, but both Gardner and Morris were expected back for the Oct. 25 game at Michi- gan State. "We'd have confidence in him if we had to put him in there," head coach Brady Hoke said of Speight, adding they'd prefer he spend the remainder of his first year learning from the sideline. U-M freshman defensive back Ja- brill Peppers, meanwhile, has missed most of his first season with different leg injuries, and Hoke acknowledged a medical redshirt might be a pos- sibility. "We would handle that when the time would come," Hoke said. Sophomore offensive guard Kyle Bosch, who took 30 days for personal leave starting after the opener with Appalachian State, is now expected to rejoin the team in January, Hoke added. He played in five games during his freshman year, three as a starter, and was the backup at both guard positions before his leave for undisclosed reasons was announced. He could also be in line for a redshirt.
