But when DaeSean Hamilton learned of the news – that his 14 receptions vs. Ohio State had set a Penn State single-game record – a small smile formed at the cor- ner of his mouth, if only for a moment. "I didn't even know that I had the school record," he said. "I was just trying to get open. Whatever play is called, it's my job to get open and make the catch whenever the opportunity presents it- self." And that's what he did, more than a dozen times. Beginning with a 10-yard catch-and-run on the first drive and fin- ishing with a critical 12-yard reception for a first down in overtime, Hamilton was one of Penn State's most consistent and active offensive players – as he has been all season. And aBer a record-breaking perform- ance such as Saturday night's, his pro- duction figures to increase. "We're going to need to continue to grow his package and find ways to get him the ball, because he's proven to us that he's a playmaker," head coach James Franklin said. "I'm really proud of him. I've been proud of him since day one for how he's been working." He worked extra hard vs. the Buckeyes. With 14 catches, and at least nine other passes thrown in his direction, Hamilton saw a workload that was heavier than what some running backs handle. If it were up to Hamilton, however, he would handle even more. "It's rough, but it's my job to go out there and catch as many balls as I possi- bly can and make the plays that are in front of me," he said. "Whatever the catch total is at the end of the game, that's what it is." This time, it was more than what any other receiver had caught in school his- tory. As Hamilton pointed out, though, even that wasn't enough to top the Buck- eyes. "We're getting better, and that's our goal during the season: to reach our peak at some point," Hamilton said. "As long as we're getting better, we're doing the right thing. Obviously we want to win at the end of the day, but we can take what we can get and just learn from it." COLD COMFORT DaeSean Hamilton takes little solace in his record-setting night HELPING HANDS Hamilton broke Freddie Scott's Penn State single- game receptions record by catching 14 passes against the Buckeyes.
